Photograph
Black-and-white photo view looking west on Fifth St. towards the Hoboken Public Library (the domed building), Hoboken, no date (ca. 1968-72). Photo was probably taken by William Tremper. 8-7/8" wide x 12-7/8" high image on 11" x 14" paper. Reverse has holographic ink notation: good shot | but bldg. no | longer there. None of the people are identified.
The shot was taken from Washington St. as the sign for Bloomfield St. can be seen at the right. The library's official address is 500 Park Ave., but the public entrance is on Fifth St. Image no. 2 has detail showing the library's dome and beyond it can be seen the corbelled cornice of the now demolished Stevens Hoboken Academy at the corner of Fifth St. and Willow Ave. It is probably the building referred to in the note on the reverse. (First Fidelity Bank built a one-story Georgian-style building on the corner and used the rest of the lot for a drive-through and parking. The bank left the location in 1991 and the building has become derelict.)
The provenance of this image is not settled, but it is believed to have been produced for a Hoboken governmental publication that was cancelled.
