Note: per Saretzky (New Jersey Photographers List -see notes for URL), he was at the address above from 1865-1870; Saretzky also records a simultaneous studio in Hoboken from 1868-1869 at 192 - modern 508 - Washington Street. View is northwest of the S.S. Russia at a pier on the lower west side of Manhattan. Based on the direction of the view, Hoboken would have been in the background across the Hudson River, but no detail can be discerned in this print. Ship was launched and completed in 1867. Based on photographer's address and known dates using it (1865-1870), the date range was established. The detail image of the lower right corner shows the vessel name, the type for the photographer's address as well as the load lines painted on the hull. These lines precede the "Plimsoll lines" that were established in later years, but are present here probably due to the fact that it was on Lloyd's Register. None of the other ships or boats in the view have been identified; one appears to be a ferryboat (possibly at Barclay St.)
