Notes: Text front: No. 13887 Board of Public Works Jersey City, June 9th 1874 A Payment of 20.00 Dollars having been made at this office for one 1 inch Stop-cock, to be inserted in the Distributing Pipe of the [crossed out] Jersey City [inserted] Hoboken Water Works in No 318 Washington Street,[inserted] Hoboken for the purpose of delivering supply of Passaic Water to premises No. bet Eighth and Ninth Sts. situated on the West side thereof, and occupied as a Building by Dittman, Lessee. You are therefore Authorized to insert such Stop-cock, and _______________ a Licensed Plumber, is permitted to connect therewith a ______ inch Service Pipe, to be used for the purposes mentioned, he conforming in all such things to the Regulations printed on the other side. [illegible] Kendall Permit Clerk N.B. - The Stop-cocks furnished by the Board of Public Works are the best that they can obtain, and are proved with a hydraulic pressure of 300 lbs. per square inch. Having done all in their power for the security of the work, they must not be held responsible for damages which may result from failure; but they will replace any Stop-cock, without charge, which may be found defective within one year from the time it is inserted. ==== ==== Text back: Regulations Respecting Tapping Distributing Pipes, and Attaching Service Pipes. No one will be permitted, under any circumstances, to tap tbe Distributing Pipes, or insert Stop-cocks therein, except the Tapper employed by the Board of Public Works, or persons in their service, and approved by them. No Plumber, not licensed by the Board of Public Works, will be permitted to attach Service Pipes to the Stop-cocks, when inserted; and every Plumber attaching a Service Pipe, must build a solid pier brick work, not less than eight inches square, at the side of the Iron Distributing Pipe, for the Service Pipe and Tapper’s Box to rest upon, and prevent them from setttisig aid injuring or breaking the Stop-cock. Trenches opened in the streets, for the purpose of inserting Stop-cocks and attaching Service Pipes, must not be allowed to remain open any longer than is really necessary to perform the work required in a proper manner. And, in refilling them, the earth must be carefully rammed, in order that the whole may be returned ; and the surface of the street must be left in as good condition as it is found. Every Plumber is required to report to this office, within five days after the same is completed, the extent and character of all apparatus in or about any dwelling, manufactory, or other place where he may have fixed the same, for introducing and using Passaic Water.
