Object/Artifact
Framed sign: Passengers Take Notice. How to Adjust Life Preservers. Put on Like Coat - Either Side Out. No place, no date, circa 1940-1960. Frame 8-5/8" wide x 11-1/2" high (6" x 9" window); two copies of printed sign on cardstock, 6-3/4" wide x 9-1/8" high; framed with typewrtten label inserted at bottom with location information. Severe water damage, stains and cockling.
This item was recovered from debris ca. 1990s at the former ferry portion of the Lackawanna Terminal, Hoboken, where ferry service by the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad ended in 1967. Which ferry this was from is not indicated.
The signs themselves are the same text and photo (of a man tying his life vest) and differ only in the typefaces used. Apparently printed in different batches or at different times. The typewritten label (the last line of which was not visible when in frame) reads: "Life Preservers will be found under seats in cabins and upper saloon, inside and outside and in boxes." This label was found as a typed original with carbon copy behind it.
The vest style life preserver seen has the stenciled lettering of the manufacturer on it: Atlantic Pacific Mfg. Co., Brooklyn, N.Y. Airbrushed out is the name of the vessel and registration date.
