Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Department, Young Men's Christian Association of Hoboken, N.J., Interchangeable Coupon Book. $5 Coupon Book. No date, circa 1960-1965.
Printed paper; staple bound perforated leaves; stiff covers, 2" high x 5-1/8" wide. Unissued and unused. Book no. 14355E.
Known as the Railroad Y.M.C.A.(or YMCA), the coupons with a value each of ten cents (five to a leaf) were "Good only for Meals, Lunches and Beds." This "Y" occupied the northwest corner of the Lackawanna (or Erie-Lackawanna) Terminal in Hoboken. Use of the Railroad Y was discussed in some agreements between the railroad and unionized employees. It served essentially as a cafeteria and/or hotel for some.
Although for five dollars of room or board, the cost of the coupon book was $5.25 which could be charged to the holder's payroll account.
The name Erie-Lackawanna is hyphenated which changed in 1963. The hyphen or lack of it is not considered definitive in dating as the railroad itself could be inconsistent in the use.
Note the railroad's diamond logo.
