McDermott, City Clerk of Hoboken. ==== pg [9] HISTORY OF VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT FROM ORGANIZATION TO DATE, INCLUDING THE HISTORY OF EACH COMPANY. Previous to the year 1845 the Village of Hoboken consisted of from 50 to 100 houses and a place of but little importance, but after 1945, through the efforts of Edwin A. Stevens who was the principle land owner, by building several rows of houses and selling lots to other parties who built on their property soon after purchasing caused the Village to increase in population more than 100 per cent. It then became apparent that the Village would continue to increase and should thrive by its being convenient to New York, and a desirable location to reside by its picturesque location. It also became evident that it would be urgent and necessary to protect the lives and property of the people that the following men, J.W. Van Boskerck, W.W. Shippen, David L. Stagg, Isaac Shreve, Wm. Hersee, Gillam Van Houten, Jas. McColloch, John McCulloch, Wm. Mitchell, Jas. T. Hatfield, Chas. Crossman, M.R. Demarest, Chas Chamberlain and Hoyt Sanford made their views known to the Town Committee. In the fall of 1847 a Fire caused by lightning and consuming 2 or 3 houses on Washington Street between First and Second Streets, revived the enthusiasm to create a Fire Department for the Village. After the Town Election in (1848), the same men [handwritten: committee] placed the matter before the people of the Village and induced the property owners to raise by voluntary subscription a sum sufficient to build an Engine House and Town Hall and also procure a suitable fire engine. Soon after starting the Funds, Mr. E.A. Stevens allowed the Town Committee the privilege to erect a Town Hall on the southwest corner of Washington and First Streets better known as Market Square, which Robert L. Stevens donated to the Village Township for market purposes only. [handwritten: The Present City Hall] The work of erecting a Town Hall was soon after commenced. At the convening of the next Legislature of the State of New Jersey, Engine Company, No. 1 made application and was duly chartered the Fire Company of Town of Hoboken. And at the next Town Election it was lawful under the charter to elect by Plurality of votes to elect seven persons to act as Trustees of the said Corporation to hold office for 1 year or until such others are elected. PRESENTATION HATS AND BELTS A SPECIALTY. ==== pg [19] HOBOKEN FIRE DEPARTMENT FUND. Organized March 7th, 1853. Preamble. Whereas, The Hoboken Fire Co., No. 1, propose to establish a fund for the relief of such disabled and indigent firemen, their widows and their families, as may in the opinion of those having in charge said fund, be considered worthy and deserving of relief ; therefore be it Resolved, That all monies accruing from initiation fees, donations and all other monies received from other sources, constitute a fund to be known as the FIRE DEPARTMENT FUND. Accordingly to above the organizers met on March 13, 1853, and by subscription created the fund at that meeting. $115 was subscribed, C. T. Perry heading the list with $20, other subscribers being J. W. Van Boskerck, J. W. Stickler, John Ireland, D. M, Demorest, N. Wosley, J. S. Currier, C. V. Clickones, A. Barker, A. L. Van Boskerck, J. Higgins and W. Hinahaugh. At subsequent meetings there were donated amounts by various citizens and corporations, including chiefly the following, J. A. Stevens, Jr., Hoboken Ferry, W. W. Shippen, Eagle Fire Insurance Co., E. A. Stevens and Engine Co. No. 1 of Hoboken. At the end of the first year of the fund the total receipts from all sources amounted to $417.75, and no disbursements. The first Board consisted of J. W. Van Boskerck, Foreman; J. W. Stickler, Secy.; Thos. Mickens, Treas.; Peter J. Powless and Charles T. Perry, incorporated March 13, 1857. The incorporators being John Mount, Joseph W. Stickler, Charles Bailliere, Charles T. Perry, J. Freeman Silke, Peter Ritter, Jr., Peter J. Powless, John Cloud and J. W. Van Boskerck. After ten years existence the total amount received from all sources was $5,542.20, and disbursements $4,998.98. Total assets of fund, $3,439.24. After being in existence for fourty-three years, ending on March 31, 1896, there has been expended for relief of disabled and indigent firemen of the late Volunteer Fire Department, $15,716, Funeral expenses $4,846.85, relief of widows and orphans $22,626.97, and for all other purposes $11,340. At the present time there are on the rolls, receiving relief from the fund, seventeen widows and nine orphans. [image: The Evening News building] THE EVENING NEWS, Hoboken's oldest daily paper, was mainly the cause of the erecting of the Soldiers' Monument in Hudson Square Park, and of the Volunteer Firemen's Monument in Church Square Park. The monuments were erected by public contributions through the efforts of the NEWS. ==== page [25] Some Notable Fires in Hoboken. 1850 to 1860. On Sunday afternoon about three o'clock on April 22nd, 1853, there was a fire in Mr. Whitman's house. The wind was very high and it was hard work for Engine Company's No. 1 and 2, and two houses were burnt and another took fire on Washington and 4th Sts., on May 4, 1853. Castle Point fire took place on June 27, 1853, March 9, 1855, a large fire at Mr. Smith's ship yard. In the year of 1854 a fire occurred in Mr. Street's building, directly opposite Odd Fellows Hall, the same was totally destroyed. 1860 to 1870. Fire at Harmonia Hotel on Dec. 26, 1862; four lives lost. The Battery yard fire June 4, 1863, on Hudson St., one member of Oceana Hose killed, named Arnold, by explosion of bomb shells. A fire occurred in the winter of 1863 at the foot of Third St., in the lime sheds of Carpenter & Bro., dealers in lumber, lime, cement and brick. Conflagration lasted seven hours and a large amount of property was destroyed. On August 28, 1864, a fire in Montague's feed store; two hours work. Fire December 28, 1866 ; Rock Tavern destroyed. January 17, 1866, 9.50 P. M., Schuhler's furniture store on Washington St.; 4 hours duty. June 20, 1866, Cardner & Harp's lumber yard on fire. November 21, 1880, fire in Stevens Castle at Castle Point; six hours duty. Fire Saturday, Aug. 4, 1880, Francis' lumber yard; 3-1/2 hours duty. Eagle Dock fire Sunday, November 6,1881, 5 P.M.; dock totally destroyed, one life lost, 7 hours duty. Aug. 11, 1882, Gahagan & Son's, planing mill; 2-1/2 hours duty. January 15, 1884, fire at Klein Wagon Works, Park Ave., between Newark and Ferry Sts., 2-1/2 hours duty. Fire January 22, 1884, Henderson and Ferry Streets, 2| hours duty.
