Six color postcards issued for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration 1909.

Six color lithographed postcards issued for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration 1909. Artist of all illustrations was Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) who is credited on the front usually at the lower left corner. See notes. All cards have text "Hudson-Fulton Celebration 1909" on the front. A recurrent theme in all is American symbols (such as flags or bunting) along with Dutch images such as windmills, flag colors, wooden shoes, women in Dutch costume, etc., symbolising the connection to Holland (Henry Hudson was employed by the Dutch for the 1609 voyage.) Cards 1 to 5 imprinted on back: "Valentine & Sons, Pub. Co., New York." Measure 3-1/2" high x 5-1/2" to 5-9/16" wide. All have a divided back, unused. All are flat cards, no debossing. Card 6 is imprinted: "Valentine & Sons, Publishing Co., New York. Printed in Great Britain." It also has their world logo at the top center. Measures 3-7/16" high x 5-1/2" wide. Divided back, postmarked Sept. 29, 1909. The two figures, Uncle Sam and the Dutch woman, are embossed. Notes: While Hoboken was not an official participant in the celebration (New York State was the organizer of the main events), city residents were able to attend some events and would have been among the viewers of the naval parades from their riverfront. These postcards would have been available to Hoboken residents and can be considered typical of what they would have seen or used. These cards came were purchased at an earlier date by a dealer from the United Decorating Co. of Hoboken. (This dealer related this detail to the donor who purchased and donated them to the museum.) United Decorating was founded in 1899 in Hoboken. It is speculated that those cards that were unused were originally store stock from 1909 as there condition is exceptional.
