Notes: Points that suggest it is an early model and not a production rule: 1. it does not state specifically the model; it conforms to model M4 for 105 mm Howitzer, M2 to M2A2 as listed and shown in the 1944 Ordance Manual of 1944; it does have Keufel & Esser mark. 2. the date printed on it, "4/28/42" (This is circa 5 months into the United States entry into World War II.) 3. the fact that the markings are printed on paper rather than silkscreened on painted wood as at least one dated 1943 was done (the paper on the example here has peeled a small amount at an edge; moisture found in typical field conditions would have damage the item easily.) 4. use of 3/16" masonite (smooth one side only) as the back laminate of the stock or stator; production model seen had all wood with a different construction; machining details appear to differ. 5. on the back are 4 printed tables; Ordnance Manual shows 3 6. the sheet that the printed tables are on cover the ten screws; in images of a 1943 model and the in Ordnance Manual, the six middle screws are visible plus the corners of the of 'table plate' are notched out for the four corner screws. 7. no measuring rule at edge as seen in a 1943 example. 8. 4 different slides are present with this rule while a 1943 example had 3 and the Ordnance Manual seems to describe three as issued.
