Metal is aluminum with black cloth finish, worn and chipped. This case was introduced in the 1920s. This compass dial is numbered in degrees, 0 to 360. Dial is black markings on silver. The "1/2" designation in the model number distinguished it from other 5600 compasses, indicating that it had a 2-1/2" needle with 0-360 degree markings. Other than 'Keuffel & Esser Co., New York" on the dial face, it has no other markings as to model. This item is the same as the aluminum case Military Compass from the mid-1920s to circa 1934 when it was re-named Forestry Compass. If made during the earlier period, it should be considered as that model. Keuffel & Esser Co. main office and factories were in Hoboken in the period when this item was made.
