Object/Artifact
Drawing tool instrument set, Mercury drawing set 9125-1/2C, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., no date, circa 1949-1954. Case: black leather grained cloth, 4-3/4" high x 9-5/8" wide x 1" thick; overlapping flaps with snap closures; fitted interior lined with green velvet; white plastic plate inside at lower right printed in gold "Mercury" and Keuffel & Esser Co., N.Y. Contents: flat type instruments, brass, chromium plated; 2 celluloid tubes with metal screw caps (appear original, but as depicted in catalog they were metal, but it is not uncommon to find a variant.)
Exterior of top flap of case has painted lettering: Government Property | P & E Division | Code 225. (It is unknown which government; the "P & E" is typically an abbreviation for "Planning and Environment.")
Per 41st edition catalog, this item had 9 major items listed by model number plus related parts. One part is missing from this set: a point holder for the 6" compass (9242-1/2). No K&E marks are found on individual items.
This particular set has been found only in the 41st edition catalog of 1949 and is not seen in the 42 edition of 1954. While the Mercury brand preceded this catalog (it is used in the 40th edition), this set is an addition to the line.
Keuffel & Esser Co. main office and factories were in Hoboken in the period when this item was made.
