Notes: Rustic Construction Works was in business from 1875-1908. Bankrupt July 1909. Succeeded by Rustic Manufacturing Company in 1909. Both firms were under the control of H.I. Pinckney (known as Harry or Harold Pinckney). An earlier address for Rustic Construction Works: 1881 - 29 Fulton St., N.Y. Helping to date this catalog are references in photo captions to two country estates that were built in 1902 which would suggest this catalog is probably no earlier than 1903. ==== ==== Archives 2015.024.0002 Transcription of printed text. ==== [front cover] Rustic Construction Works 33 Fulton St. New York Since 1875 ==== [page 1] THIS business is a unique one, there being no other of its character in the country. Our products go to all sections, and the building where these products are turned out has become one of the landmarks of lower New York. The work is artistic in the highest degree, and new designs and effects are constantly sought. The results secured by thirty-five years of experience and endeavor are to be seen on every hand in the five floors of our building. Our men are not merely artisans; they are artists, who have labored with us hand in hand, for years, attaining thereby an artistic perfection which cannot be successfully imitated. For the Country estate this work is ideal; the effects produced by the skillful use of trees, branches and roots in their natural state, with their graceful and varied forms, for structures, or for furniture and ornaments to be placed about the grounds, are far more harmonious with such surroundings than the rigid lines of the conventional shapes made by the best artisans from lumber. It is manifestly impossible in a catalogue of this size, to do more than touch upon some of the merits of Rustic Work, and submit a few illustrations of our many and varied products. The basic element of most Rustic Work is the red-heart log cedar, with the bark on. This has been selected, not only for its great beauty, but also for its strength and durability, the products being good for a life-time. Superb effects are secured from the use of the silver birch, and other woods are used, it being quite possible, at times, to secure satisfactory results from the use of native material. Our long experience in designing special effects, appropriate to the locations and existing conditions, is at your service, and will be found of great benefit in any contemplated improvement. We shall be pleased to make a personal inspection of your property; give you our views as to how the best effects can be secured, and will submit such sketches and plans as may be appropriate. All of our larger products, such as Tea Houses, Bridges, Fences, etc., are constructed either upon the grounds, or in our factory, as may be desired. When constructed at our factory, they are shipped in sections and can easily be put together at the grounds. You may trust us to act as your architect and builder. If, however, you prefer the services of your own architect, we are glad to act with him, and make the improvements in accordance with his plans. You are cordially invited to visit and inspect our building, and your orders, whether personal, or by mail or telephone, will receive prompt attention and satisfactory fulfillment. Observe the effect of the knotty roots on corners of structure. ==== [page 5] A Rustic Tea House and Bridge on a Ravine [photo illustration] Copyrighted Plate IV.
