DescriptionBarch-Payzant Lettering Pen Set, product no. N3255, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., (Hoboken), no date, circa 1943-1954. Paper covered cardboard slipcase box with fitted interior; contents present: four pens of the six called for (Numbers 1, 3, 5 and 6 as stated in catalog; lacking nos. 7 and 8 which would complete this set); printed paper label on tray end. Pens are 7" long with black painted holder with machined brass nibs; cork protectors. Each nib is marked K&E along with the pen size number. The 'N' in the product number was typically used to denote new items. This N3225 first shows up in the 39th edition of 1943 and drops the 'N' in the 42 edition of 1954. See image of page 179 of the 39th edition catalog of 1943, the interim wartime edition. These ink pens were typically intended for "freehand lettering on mechanical and architectural drawings. They are also widely employed in the commercial field for marking up price tags, show cards, etc." K&E main office and factories were in Hoboken when these items were made.
