Barometer, aneroid wall model 512-1, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York, n.d., ca. 1875-1890.
Object/Artifact
Aneroid wall barometer, model 512-1, made by the Keuffel & Esser Co., New York, no date, circa 1875-1890. Brass case instrument, 3-1/2" diameter, bevel crystal; mounted in carved walnut frame, 7" diameter x 1-1/2" deep; metal tab loop for hanging. Back has blind stamped numbers: "512" and "1" with a lozenge shaped label pasted to back, 1-1/* x 1-3/8" wide with contemporary holographic entries: "512-1" and "$3.00."
The silvered dial has "Keuffel & Esser Co., New-York | Made in Germany." (New York is hyphenated.) Closed back plate has no markings, but several adjustment screws. Unknown if this item appears in pre-1900 catalogues due to unavailability of resources.
K&E had factories in Hoboken at this time, but they did import a large number of items and had a factory in Germany during this period as well as a retail showroom or store in New York. The model number listed of a three digit number followed by a single digit is consistent with K&E product numbering of the period. The model number of "512" is used in the 1900 catalog for a drawing tool (beam compass), so it is likely that this object is pre-1890 or so.
It is also possible this was not from a K&E showroom, but was sold wholesale to another seller.
