Object/Artifact
Tootsie Roll advertisement on school book jacket cover. Issued by J. & R. Kayes, Baltimore, MD. Printed by Norsid Manufacturing Co., Inc., Yonkers, N.Y for Berkow Sales Co., Baltimore, MD. No date, circa 1950s. Light brown kraft paper printed with brown ink plus orange in Tootsie Roll ad, 12-7/8" high x 20" wide. Crease marks per use to cover book.
The front cover panel has a text ad for J. & R. Kayes, Jewelry, Clothing, Home Furnishings, Baltimore, Maryland. (This retail department store was obviously the customer of the Berkow Co. for this promotional item.) Book covers such as this one were typcially given out free by stores to students or their parents when doing back-to-school shopping for clothes and supplies.
The Tootsie Roll ad on the back cover panel features a pair of teenagers on roller skates each holding an open large Tootsie Roll that they are eating. A large wrapped Tootsie Roll appears below them. At the top left - "Delicious!" and below the candy bar - "America's Favorite Candy." The girl wears a 'letter' sweater bearing a 'T' (for Tootsie.)
Not stated, but Tootsie Rolls and related products were made the Sweets Company of America in Hoboken when this item was issued.
