Object/Artifact
Franklin Baker Company, Makers of Baker's Coconut, Hoboken, New Jersey. No date, circa 1924-1928. Lithographed (deep blue & gold) metal box (or tin can) with hinged lid, 5" wide x 3-1/2" deep x 1-1/4" high; ink stamped brand name on left side on 'gold' panel - "Banner". Blued metal finish inside container; original contents not present.
Believed to be a container for promotional sample distribution. The 'Banner' brand was one of several commercial lines of coconut that also included Snowdrift and Anchor during this period. The colors on the box are similar to the ones on retail product labels. Notably the labels on the large containers that the commericial brands shipped in were primarily red with the blue and gold for lettering.
The company arrived in Hoboken about 1924 and became a division of General Foods in 1928.
