Object/Artifact
Wood 16" chalk compass made by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York and Hoboken, no date, circa late 1900s or up to 1920s. Maple stained wood (pear?), 17" overall length x 1-15/16" wide x 1" thick; turned tapered legs with bored split ends for chalk and compass point; metal tightening ring with bolt (bolt not original; presumed to have been a thumbscrew. Lacking original pivot screw and thumb bolt on flat side where marked.
No product number appears on item except size, a blindstamped "16", which is the length from the pivot bolt to the end of the wood where the chalk and compass point are inserted. Blindstamped with the K&E circular logo and the griffin trademark.
Item has not been located in the main catalogs 1900 to 1927. This item may have been listed only in a separate school or education products catalog which is unavailable at the time of this record.
