Cocomalt can proof; made by Penick & Ford Ltd, Inc., N.Y., N.Y. N.d., ca. 1956-1965.
Object/Artifact
Lithographed tin Cocomalt 12 ounce can proof; product made by Penick & Ford Ltd, Inc., New York, N.Y. No date, circa 1956-1965.
Printed flat metal sheet, ca. 4-7/8" high (irregularly trimmed top edge) x 12-1/8" wide. Reverse has two 3/8" wide vertical marks indicating previous adhesive tape apparently for label that was on the reverse or mounting on a presentation board or a printer's file sheet/folder.
The sheet was for a 12 ounce container of Cocomalt with promotional pricing banner across front panel: "6¢ [cents] Off, Pay Only Price Marked." Bottom and ends are straight and square with the top edge showing slight irregularities from hand trimming with snips. Also not the presence of color registration marks at center and each end. Typically these would have been visible or as prominently visible as seen here if this were an finished can that had been cut open.
The layout, design and artwork have some similar elements as found on objects 2014.014.0148, which is a half pound can proof carrying R.B. Davis name and a copyright date of 1956.
Cocomalt was originally made by R.B. Davis Co. in Hoboken; in the 1950s, Penick & Ford bought the company and continued to produce the product. Penick & Ford was New York based, so they used that city name on labels at some point. (Note: they did use the Hoboken address on Davis Baking Powder for a period.) They were bought by R.J. Reynolds in 1965 and by 1966-1966 were no longer involved as manufacturers of retail grocery products. When production of Cocomalt ceased in Hoboken has not been determined.
The styles of the coffee / hot cocoa cup and soda glass depicted suggests the earlier than later date.
