Object/Artifact
Flag: A.J. Demarest High School, Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1950-1956.
A professionally made item, but no maker's marks found on it. Red cotton, 32" high x 60" wide, doubled sided (doubled fabric), with same white cambric applique lettering sewn to both sides; 1-1/2" white chainette fringe; pole sleeve short edge; tie.
Block lettering, line for line:
5-1/2" high: A.J. DEMAREST
4-5/8" high: HIGH SCHOOL
2-7/8" high: HOBOKEN N.J.
Judy Lombardi was a 1956 graduate of Demarest and stated that she received the flag at a later reunion of the class from a fellow member of that graduating class which suggests that it was made in the early 1950s.
Demarest was Hoboken's only public high school and was at Fourth and Garden Streets. The name was used until 1962 when a replacement building opened on Clinton Street (full block bounded by 8th and 9th Streets) and the name reverted to Hoboken High School.
