Black-and-white contact sheet of 3 photos of buildings & one of enemy aliens, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1890-1915. 8" x 10" wide print. Reverse is blank. Probably made by Robert Foster. Original 4" x 5" negatives were copy images of prints in the Hoboken Public Library Historical Picture Collection, identified by HPL number from their collection catalog.
1. HPL 78: Interior group photo, German Club, costume affair at Union Club, February 11, 1909. Union Club was then known as the Deutscher or German Club. Photo was taken by William Manewal of Hoboken.
2. HPL 639 (per Hans in HPL catalog): Washington Street at First St. looking west. Shows large crowd at a grand opening or some such event. Numerous banners and bunting. Photo taken sometime after 1892.
3. HPL 6: Steneck Building, home of Steneck Trust Company, 95 River St. Per Hans: Photo ca. 1912-15. (later was Seaboard Trust Company). [Note: entrance gate with sign for Hamburg-American Lines to the left.]
4. HPL 723 (per Hans in HPL catalog): Enemy aliens arriving by train in Hoboken to be deported. "Parole Heimat" says the banner on the passenger train carrying German prisoners of war and enemy aliens arriving from Fort Ogelthorpe, GA. The Germans, 1,431 of them, traveled in three special trains under the guard of U.S. regulars. They will be deported on the liner Pocahontas. (Donated by Dave Hamilton).
