Barber shop union price cards, two, framed; from business operated by Nick Balassone, 1106 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J.; circa 1954-1968. 8" x 10" black wood frame with glass, screw eyes at top for use as hanging sign. Two cards originally in frame. Price card 1: Hoboken Master Barbers Association, Inc., circa 1962. Reverse has pencil notation: New Price Dec. 1 - 1962. Price card 2 found in frame behind the card above: Hoboken Master Barbers Association, Inc., circa 1954. Reverse has pencil notation: End of 8 year's Price. Believed that card 1 superseded card 2 as indicated by notations and price increases of only 25 cents for haircuts from listed prices on each card. While Nick Balassone is known to have had an establishment for many years at 1106 Washington, he may have had another location not yet ascertained. (He died in 2008 at 106 years of age - see notes for an obituary.) ---- Cards are stored out of frame; frame is stored with cards.

Born in Sulmone, Italy, on October 14, 1902, Mr. Balassone immigrated to the United States in 1909 as a young boy. A self-made man and an innovator in the hair care profession, Mr. Balassone established the forerunner of the uni-sex hair salon in Hoboken, New Jersey, having maintained his shop for men and woman on 11th and Washington Street for many years, Nick Balassone was predeceased by his beautiful wife of almost 70 years, Jennie (nee Radice) and never fully recovered from that loss. Mr. Balassone, at 106 years of age, was the oldest registered voter in Hudson County. He was a firm believer In maintaining physical fitness and health and would walk at least 5 miles a day to maintain the same, virtually to the end of his life. He is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Nicholas was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life and he will be missed by all.Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 8:30 AM at the Leber Funeral Home, Kennedy Boulevard at 20th Street, Union City, NJ thence to St. Lawrence R.C. Church In Weehawken. NJ where at 9:30 AM a Funeral Mass will be offered. Entombment Fairvew Mausoleum.
