Album of photographs belonging to Julius and Mary Durstewitz.
Photograph
Album of photographs and memorabilia belonging to Julius and Mary Durstewitz of Hoboken, containing materials from the late 1880's to the 1940's. Digital images only; original in possession of Durstewitz family.
Julius was director of Hoboken Playground Director for over a quarter century, ca. 1910's - 1940. The album includes many photographs of playgound field bands as well as family photographs depicting Hoboken life (including Sybil's Cave) and covering some three generations of the family. Some are Army related or of vacations that are obviously not in Hoboken. The album maker is not known, but the creator was likely his wife, Mary Szontag Durstewitz.
The album holds only mounted items (no loose enclosures of any kind): 298 photographs, 10 newsclippings, a blueprint cartoon and one ticket. The photographs are mostly small. They include cabinet photos, albumen and silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes and one tin-type. Except for some group photos of the Hoboken Playground Field Band and related images, none are captioned or dated. Many of them had their margins scissor-clipped prior to mounting. Information, if any, on the reverse is not available.
Physical album: Commercially available (stationery or photo store) photograph album typical of the 1930's - 1940's. Covers (see images 74 and 75): 13-1/2" wide x 10-3/16" high; brown leather-grained paper over boards with dull gold printed lettering "Photographs" on front cover only; two black grommeted holes for string lace binding. Content pages: 83 black paper un-numbered leaves, 9-3/4" high x 13" wide, with two punched holes at left edge for binding. Most leaves had items mounted only on recto. Of the 83 leaves, 17 were blank on both sides.
All leaves with content are imaged as full pages in this record and have been given a leaf number as found in sequence. (Blank sides of leaves were noted in caption for any leaf with items that was imaged; the blank side was not imaged. Leaves that were blank on both sides were numbered and left in collation sequence; they were not imaged; blank both sides: leaves 17, 56 -70, 81(evidence on that leaf of two mounted items on recto that are no longer present.)
Each item found in the album has been catalogued in a separate record starting with photo catalogue 2005.078.0101. (So that the sequence of items is maintained it includes leaves that have newsclippings or memorabilia, which typically would be in the archives catalog.) Each item is referenced to the leaf number and its position on the page. This makes it possible to look at full pages here and then search for items from a particuliar leaf by leaf number.
