Business records: Joseph Apicella & Sons Fish Market, 309 First St., Hoboken; Accounts Receivable circa 1964-1972. Circa 1900 record sheets, 9-1/4" high x 12" wide; 4-hole punched for ledger binders (no binders present.) With: numerous enclosures.
Recovered from debris at the site of the former business in Jan. 2008.
The records have yet to be processed in detail. While they appear to be mostly receivables, a few may be accounts payable. At present, the records are in 24 numbered folders in 4 boxes in the order as found. The order is roughly chronological (some sheets have no year date, but are presumed to be of the year found on other sheets in the group), but when apparently used at some prior time, they were mixed up. No container list, index or other finding aid has yet been created.
The records have the names of business accounts and sometimes the location of their clients. While mostly financial, the annotations and enclosures (some billheads, memo slips and such) sometimes offer detail about what they sold and the prices of the time. Apicella's customers were wide-ranging both geographically and in the size of business. Local businesses such as Maxwell House and Lipton Tea which had cafeterias or institutional customers such as Saint Mary Hospital would be some of the larger Hoboken accounts. The smaller ones included most of Hoboken's restaurants including the Clam Broth House and Helmers.
Among the largest accounts were ocean liner companies such as American Export Lines which provisioned their passenger vessels and probably their freighters. Holland America was still a customer even though they had left Hoboken for New York in 1963. The records for these lines (and there were other ocean liner companies in the records) have ship names and dates.
