U.S. Navy photo NH 70166 Donor purchased from a seller who provided this information without citing a source: Formally the Vaterland, owned and operated by the Hamburg America Line, this is the WWI German War prise Leviathan, seized by the United States when Germany started the war, she still stands as the largest ship ever to sail under the US flag. Here the 60,000 ton ship arrives at Hoboken in 1918. Note that a New York Times article of December 17, 1918 is titled "LEVIATHAN HERE WITH MEN WHO WON HONORS IN BATTLE; Giant Transport Brings More Than 8,000 of America's Armed Forces." Note the Leviathan usually docked at U.S. Army Transport Services pier 4. Note the line at the right which shows the vessel is very near the dock.
