[Map] Letterhead of Union Terminal Cold Storage Co., New York [Jersey City, N.J.], May 2, 1918, with map printed on the back of New York City and New Jersey region depicting railroad lines (including tunnels), Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, Hoboken Ferry and other ferries, shipping terminals and piers. Single engraved leaf, 8-1/2" x 11" high, typed; printed reverse.
Content concerns a freight bill of the D.L. & W. R.R. Co. (Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad) which was being forwarded to a customer of the cold storage company. (The D.L. & W. had a passenger terminal in Hoboken plus freight operations in Hoboken and Jersey City) The enclosure referred to in the letter is not present.
The map on the reverse does show Hoboken and the rail connections as well as the piers and major lines, but not as they were currently being used. The map represents the southern piers as used prior to World War One by the Hamburg-American Line and North German Lloyd Steamship Co. as their American home ports. The piers were at the time of the letter controlled by the U.S. Army as the main part of their Port of Embarkation during War. Afterwards the piers would remain under U.S. Government administration. The German lines were not in operation from the U.S. during the war and, postwar, did not return to Hoboken as their American home port.
The creation of this letterhead was obviously prior to America's entry into World War I and apparently the company was using this "out-of-date" letterhead to use up its stock and/or due to wartime restrictions on paper use that would not allow it to be re-done.
Other Hoboken lines indicated: Holland-American Line, Wilson Line, Scandinavian-American Line.
Other details of Hoboken depicted were the campus of the Stevens Institute of Technology, Castle Point, Hoboken Shore Railroad, Hudson Street, Washington Street, Willow Avenue and three parks without names (Hudson Square, Church Square and County or Columbus Parks.)
