Color photos, seven, of the exterior of Stan's Sporting Goods, 528 Washington Street, with remains of previous business sign, Cinderella Baby Shop, Hoboken, Oct. 7, 2010.
Digital photos by Robert Foster. Tiffs media archive.
Sign reads left to right: Children's Wear; Cinderella; Baby Shop.
Business at present location removed their old sign to renovate the store facade. On the ceramic wall tiles behind the removed back-lit sign was the lettering as above. In image 2, the enhanced view shows darker spots that are patched holes once used for posts that supported neon tube lighting. Their positions follow the script and block lettering.
Cinderella is known to have been at this location at least as late as 1951. Early date is not known at this time, but the lettering style suggests the 1940s. Dix Carpet was at this street number as seen in 1938 photo with very different facade. It is likely the new facade seen here did not happen until after World War II.
Stan's, established in 1947 per the present owner, was located at 536 Washington St. prior to occupying the present location at 528. According to the owner, they moved to this location from 536 Washington St. in the early 1950s.
Note: photos taken on day that exterior was painted; sign is no longer visible.
