B+W aerial photo of the Maxwell House Coffee plant, Hoboken, n.d., spring/summer 1939.
Photograph
Black-and-white aerial photo of the Maxwell House Coffee plant, Hoboken, no date, spring-summer 1939.
8" x 10" wide print. Photograph taken by Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. as credited in image at lower right corner and on reverse with other credit text, 292 Madison Ave., N.Y. Reverse has large inkstamp regarding credits along with holographic ink notations.
The plant officially opened in October 1939, but this view was likely photographed in the spring of that year. Note a number of covered Lackawanna Railroad barges.
Although undated, several elements in the photo help to establish its probable date.
Detail 1, left edge: demolition underway(?) on buildings to the south of the plant or leftover construction materials; ground is fully covered.
Detail 2, center: construction debris and materials present area between canning plant and office building (circa 1125 Hudson Street.)
Detail 3, center: view of the Maxwell House "Good to the Last Drop" sign plus the Nungesser-Dickinson Seed Company (painted lettering on tall building) is still present north of the plant; the machine shop of the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard will expand south along Hudson Street circa 1942 to 12th St. where the seed company building was located.
These details strongly suggest that the photo was taken just prior to the opening.
