Bond: New Jersey & New York Railroad Co., Jersey City; $1000 Mortgage Bond, 1892; 1932 Extension Contract

Mortgage bond: New Jersey & New York Railroad Company, $1000 General Mortage Forty Year Five Per Cent Gold Bond. Issued December 31,1892. No. 266. With attachment: Extension Contract dated December 31, 1932 running to Jan. 1, 1938. Bond: 9" x 13-5/8" wide (folds to 3-1/2" wide); blind corporate seal lower left. Contract: 9" high x 8" wide; revenue stamp; with all coupons clipped except 1 attached with contemporary adhesive tape. Signatures of President and Secretary on both documents. While the company was a Jersey City corporation, it had a significant role in Hoboken (see notes) including service on the tracks on the west side of Hoboken from the 19th C. onward.

Notes: Established in 1856, it was branch line of the Erie Railroad since 1896. Prior to 1958 it would have run to Erie's terminal in Jersey City. From 1958 it would have run to the Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken as the Erie and D.L.& W. began to consolidate passenger operations out of Hoboken. It continued as part of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad after the 1960 merger and would become the Pascack Valley line of New Jersey Transit that operates from Hoboken Terminal. Confusingly, this line was called New Jersey & New York Railroad in earlier years as well as the New York & Jersey Railroad. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2010-12-04
