Album: B+W photos, 28, of Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard retirement party, Union Club, Hoboken, ca. 1979-1981.
Photograph
Album of black-and-white photos, twenty-eight of a Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard retirement party held on the second floor of the Union Club, Hoboken, ca. 1979-1981. 5" x 7" prints in white plastic comb binding; plain gray covers. Photographer not indicated. Reverse of most are blank except for occasional pencil numbers. People are unidentified except for Joseph Cangelosi (see below) and Lawrence Baum.
Donor Joseph Cangelosi was the General Superintendent of the shipyard at this time; he dated these photos. See Cangelosi biography.
There were apparently seven or eight retiring men who were presented with plaques honoring them for their service. None have been identified except for possibly Lawrence Baum.
Retirements and associated ceremonies are not an uncommon event at an operation this large (it was down to circa 300 employees at this time from a high of over 3000). It was potentially a bittersweet occasion as the Bethlehem Steel Corporation would end Hoboken operations by 1982 and some may have been anticipating the winding down of the yard operations.
