Yard staff is seen inspecting the stern (port side view) where the stern frame and rudder were torn off and propeller while seen in place has damage. Documentation photo used for publicity promotion. Not stated in the press release(s) is that the grounding that caused the damage happened on December 20, 1974 which which allowed the dating of all the photo(s) and press releases as 1975. This photo is one of five in a press kit accompanied by a full page press release (which was obviously issued after May 1975 as it states the work was completed and the ship departed Hoboken on May 15.) Y. 10022 Phone: (212) 688-5522, Ext. 311 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE When the Liberian bulk carrier MV GRAND JUSTICE ran aground in the St. Lawrence River, she cracked her stern frame, tore off her rudder, damaged her tail shaft, and bent her propeller. Fully loaded with grain, the 10,030- gross-ton ship was towed to Bethlehem Steel's Hoboken (N.J.) ship repair yard where she arrived on January 29. There the eight-year-old, 484-foot-long ship was drydocked and surveyed. The chief concern was the rebuilding of the stern frame. / Because of an order backlog in forging shops, the GRAND JUSTICE might have to wait as long as a year. However, Hoboken yard officials were familiar with a faster way, a rarely used method of building stern frames from laminated steel plate. In the yard's machine shop, eight plates, each about 3 inches thick were squirt welded and then reinforced by 20 1-1/2-inch bolts. Meanwhile, the shop fabricated a new rudder, sent the rudder stock to the company's plant in Bethlehem, Pa., for straightening and sent the bent propeller to a sub contractor for repair.
