B+W photo of wheelhouses for Zim Line container ships at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken, n.d, ca. late 1970s.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of three shop made wheelhouses for Zim Line container ships at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken, no date, circa late 1970s. 8" x 10" print. Photographer not indicated; photo number 63790A11 (on press release; not inkstamped on reverse as typically done.) Attached: mimeographed press release; full text below.
View is inside the plate shop where two men are seen inspecting three pre-fabricated units on the floor. See photo 2011.025.0370 for view of a ship with one of these new wheelhouses completed (note that this photo and .0370 bear the same photo number and same press release text.)
Zim LInes, an Israeli flag line, had a division called Zim Container Service (ZCS) founded in 1972. The photo and release are not dated; estimated that this was from the mid to late 1970s. It mentions four ships, but none are named.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WELCOME ABOARD. Containers stacked three and four deep
are an efficient way to move cargo but standing as high as 40
feet above the ship's deck, they limit forward visibility.
Faced with the problem, Zim Line officials decided, - "If you
can't lower the load, raise the bridge." Accordingly, for
four of their ships, they arranged for Bethlehem Steel's
Hoboken, N. J., ship repair yard to install new wheel houses
on top of existing ones (shown here, top center), increasing
the helmsmen's elevation by 10 feet. Each new house is 20
feet square, 10 feet high and weighs 2.5 tons. They were
shop assembled down to the last detail and hoisted on to
the ship with two gantry cranes. Wiring and plumbing were
connected and the ship was ready to sail. Each installation
required about 10 days.
