B+W photo of baseball centennial plaque at 11th & Hudson Sts., Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1950s-1960s.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of baseball centennial plaque, Eleventh St. at Hudson St., Hoboken, no date, circa 1950s-1960s.
4-3/4" wide x 7-3/4" high print with profile trimmed top. Photo taken by Dispatch Photo Service, Union City, N.J. (Hudson Dispatch newspaper.) Reverse has inkstamp credit; holographic ink: Hoboken, N.J.; modern hologram authentication label: Sporting News Collection. Rubber cement stained back.
The view is northwest from Hudson Street towards Eleventh Street with the northwest corner of Washington Street in the background. While undated, the photo is definitely not from immediately after it was erected or dedicated (at the Hoboken Baseball Centennial parade, June 19, 1946) as rust is seen on the support frame and the metal covering the pillar has numerous dents. The sign was doubled sided; see related.
The reason for the cut top is not apparent, but likely that this print was used for paste-up in a photomontage for a newspaper story; possibly the 1955 celebration for the 100th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the City of Hoboken.
Text on the plaque:
Baseball
On June 19, 1846 the first match game of baseball was played here on the Elysian Fields between the Knickerbockers and the New Yorks. It is generally conceded that until this time the game was not seriously regarded.
