Photograph
Cabinet photo of Charlie Cullen posed wearing a costume in photographer's studio, Hoboken, 1895.
2-3/4" x 3-13/16" high sepia-tone print on 4-1/4" x 6" embossed mount. Photograph taken by [George W.] Day, Hoboken (imprinted in blue at front bottom.) Reverse has contemporary holograph pencil: Charlie Cullen, 1895.
The boy appears to be about 7-9 years old. Standing next to a newel post with a girl's doll lying on it, he is dressed whimsically, if not comically, in a dress or gown plus a lace collar. A very large sash of dark fabric is tied crudely in a bow around his waist. With dark stockings, he wears low-cut decorated woman's shoes (with low heels) that have bows. The nature of the photo is not indicated such as whether this was a costume for an amateur theatrical or a pageant. He does appear happy and smiles with a certain glee at the camera.
Per research by Gary Saretsky found at http://gary.saretzky.com/photohistory/njphotographers.html
George W. Day was a photographer at 628 Washington, Hoboken, 1896-1898.
(The photo here would appear to extend the early date for known works to 1895.)
