Photograph
Black-and-white photo looking south on Willow Avenue from Seventeenth Street; streetcar tracks and freight rail crossing, Hoboken, no date, (1927).
8" x 10" wide print. Photograph by R. Magnus, Photographer, Hoboken (blind emboss lower right.) Reverse has modern pencil text: Willow + 17th St.
In this series of photos, 2011.048.0042 to 2011.048.0059, photo 2011.048.0045 (the photo in the record here) has a 1927 New Jersey automobile license plate which can be read and photo 2011.048.0058 has a poster for an event dated as Saturday, September 24th which corresponds to a Saturday in 1927.
Street level streetcar or trolley tracks on Willow Ave. are Public Service Coordinated Transport.
The railroad crossing signs are for tracks of the New York Central Railroad, Erie Railroad and the primary right-of-way holder, New Jersey Junction Railroad. The crossing at the center of the street has four stanchions with ropes. Two men in suits, apparently officials of some type are nearby, presumably to perform an inspection of the crossing and its condition. The tracks are very worn and mis-aligned.
In the center detail image, a gasoline pumps or a station is on the west side of Willow Ave. south of 17th St. In the right detail image, a building with Hudson Taxi Co. signage on it is seen. The gasoline pumps may be associated with the taxicab company.
This photo is from an accession group that consists of photographs from Hoboken Police Department records. Discarded in the 1990s, the original documentary purpose of this photo is not stated or apparent.
