B+W photo of a head-on bow view of the Leviathan at its Hoboken pier, Hoboken, ca. Jan. 10 to 12, 1938.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of the bow of the Leviathan at its final American pier, Hoboken, circa January 10 to 12, 1938.
7" wide x 9" high print. Photography taken by Acme Newspictures, Inc. (Acme Photo), New York City. Reverse has inkstamp of photo agency and a reference department stamp of "N.E.A" dated 1-13-'38; mimeographed caption mounted; other pencil mark-up including: A31 Leviathan.
View is east looking up from the pier directly in line with the bow of the former passenger ocean liner (its name can be seen on the hull.) Once the Vaterland, later the U.S.S. and U.S.N. Leviathan before its last role as the S.S. Leviathan of the United States Lines, it was decommissioned as seen here and thus just the Leviathan.
The caption text (below) refers to the fact that the vessel would soon be leaving Hoboken for a last voyage across the Atlantic to be scrapped. It did leave on January 25, 1938.
Text of caption:
9 -- The nose of the Giantess of the Seas as it will looked today. Hobokenites will miss this sight.
