Archive
Wall calendar, 4 leaves only: Todd Shipyards Corporation, 1943. Full-color printed paper, 14-3/4" wide x 18-3/4" high. Full page sheets as removed from calendar: March, August, October, November. Large tiffs, media archive.
Each featured a vivid and dramatic illustration of a ship or ships at sea or in naval action (plus one submarine is depicted.) The artist is credited as Fred J. Hoertz.
Todd headquarters were based in New York City, but it had thirteen subsidiaries around the country which are all listed. It included Todd Hoboken Dry Docks (the former Tietjen & Lang Dry Dock Company in Weehawken Cove, straddling the city line between Hoboken and Weehawken; it was one of the first yards acquired when Todd was founded in 1916.) While this calendar is not from the Hoboken facility, it would have typically been used there and probably issued to some employees as well as clients.
A significant company in World War II shipbuilding and repair, the calendar featured patriotic elements such the 'V' (for Victory) as background of the calendar days and the Army / Navy "E" pennant (for Excellence) awarded to them depicted at the top right.
