The Morris & Essex Railroad preceded the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. It was leased by the D.L. & W. in 1868 and who took control in 1869.
This certificate represents the surrender of M&E shares for transfer into Delaware Lackwanna & Western R.R. stock per the 1945 merger of the M&E into the D.L. & W. R.R. (Its suburban passenger routes originated or ended at Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken; the suburban routes are still operate and are known as the Morris & Essex lines of New Jersey Transit.)
