B+W photo of looking west up the Fourteenth St. Viaduct, Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1965-1969.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo looking west up the Fourteenth Street Viaduct, Hoboken, no date, circa 1965-1969.
3-1/4" x 4-3/4" wide print. Photograph taken by donor Jack O'Brien (but not so marked.) Reverse has modern ink notations by O'Brien as noted below.
Photo taken from crosswalk on east side of Willow Avenue at Fourteenth St. The Yardley building is seen in Union City above the top end of the viaduct
To north of the viaduct (right) is an industrial building with the name of the company on it: McDonough & Lydon Mfg. Co. / Tom McDonough Associates / Dining Table Pads. This company was at 1401 Clinton St.
Detail 1: Atop that building are two billboards which assist in dating the image. One has an advertisement for Palisades Amusement Park. It closed September 12, 1971 which helps to date this image and others in the accession. While out-of-date ads often remain on billboards, the prominent location of this one and the likelihood that it would have been re-used, makes 1971 to 1972 as a useful late date.
The other billboard is for Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola to go in lift-top cans.
Lift-top cans were introduced by Coke in 1964.
Detail 2: Also helping to date this is signage on the post for the traffic signal. There is a directional sign for American Export Isbrandtsen Lines which was or had been operating at the Port Authority Piers in Hoboken. The company ended operations in Hoboken approximately 1971-1972. Again, signs do not get taken down right away, so it is only a rough guide to the date.
The American Export sign and two others above it (Holland Tunnel; Hoboken P.A.[Port Authority] Marine Terminal) all have arrows directing traffic going to them up the viaduct. This route would take traffic to Union City and through Jersey City Heights before coming back to go to the Tunnel or to reach the Hoboken piers. Apparently because of heavy truck use plus traffic congestion, the routes that would seem the most direct way to reach the piers from Willow Avenue and 14th St. (going east on Fourteenth and then south on Washington Street) or to go to the Holland Tunnel (going south on Willow Ave.) were not the preferred routes by those government bodies responsible for managing roadways.
O'Brien notes on the back: Up the Viaduct, 14th St & Willow Ave.

This photo is in a group of 23 in this accession which are the same size prints and apparently taken during the same period; none are dated, but automobile models and other elements seen in some images suggest the date range.
