Color photographs, five, of groundbreaking ceremony for Marineview Plaza development, Fourth Street near River St., May 14, 1973.
3-1/2 square prints. Photos taken by Donald "Red" Barrett. Reverse of all but photo four are blank; photo 4 dated by photographer: May 14, 1973. All scans have been enhanced due to color fading and yellowed prints.
All photos have a view to buildings on the east side of Hudson Street between Third and Fourth Streets.
Photo 1: speakers' platform with bunting; view west.
Photos 2 and 3: four men posed before groundbreaking with two gold-plated shovels; holding shovels: (left) Louis DePascale (President, Hoboken City Council); to his left: Mayor Steve Cappiello; other two men not identified; view is northwest with Saints Peter & Paul Church in background (at northwest corner of Hudson and Fourth Streets.)
Photos 4 and 5: same men now ceremonially digging dirt; Cappiello and DePascale have reversed positions from photos 2 and 3 and are seen sharing a third shovel (only two shovels were seen in photos above) turning earth.
The entire development would be called Marineview (sometimes Marine View) Plaza or Towers. The site where the ceremony was held would become the residential apartment tower known as I Marineview Plaza.
