Color photographs, three, of the S.S. Stevens floating dormitory at long pier, River Road, Hoboken, 1974.
3-3/8" x 5" wide satin finish resin coated prints. Photographs by Donald "Red" Barrett. Reverse of all are blank except for photos 1 and 2 which have print processor's date: Jan 75. Images enhanced due to color shift.
A floating dormitory used 1968-1975 by the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken. It was docked in the Hudson River at the long dock, Eighth Street Pier, below Castle Point. It was the former S.S. Exochorda of the American Export Lines and its conversion to a dormitory ship was undertaken at the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard starting in Oct. 1967. It was towed from Hoboken in August 1975.
The foliage would indicate late summer or early fall 1974 shots and not the print date of January 1975.
Photo 1: view north of the ship with Castle Point to the left with the Stevens Administration building (now Howe Center).
Photo 2: view northwest from about Fifth Street and the Hudson River through the legs of a barge derrick boom.
Photo 3: view east from Castle Point Lookout looking down at the starboard side of the ship; note 'S' on the funnel; New York City skyline with Empire State Building.
