Photograph taken by donor Jack O'Brien (but not so marked.) Reverse has modern ink notations by O'Brien as recorded below. Detail 1: Right of center in the background is the smokestack of Alco Gravure (Alco-Gravure) which was at Monroe St. covering the block from 9th to 10th Sts. Detail 2: The building at the lower right is the Cornell & Underhill Co. (name on building at street corner, 1300 Jefferson St.) - they manufactured pipe and their plant was built in 1930-1931. It covered the full block between Thirteenth and Fourteenth Streets and Jefferson to Madison Streets. In the center background is construction underway of a foundation structure (part of which serves as its parking garage) for the Doric apartment building in Union City which was in the heights above 11th and Monroe Streets. The Doric website states it was built in 1969 (probably meaning year that it opened), thus this early construction helps to date this photo as 1967 or 1968. O'Brien notes on the back: 11th & Jackson st. [cataloger's note: Jackson Street does not go further north than Tenth St.] Hinde [&] Dauch Paper Box Factory [cataloger's note: this is a historic reference to a company that once had an operation in Hoboken and may have had a later name of a corporate parent - it does not show up in telephone directories of the period.] ---- This photo is in a group of 23 in this accession which are the same size prints and apparently taken during the same period; none are dated, but automobile models and other elements seen in some images suggest the date range.
