Photograph
Black-and-white photo of baseball centennial plaque with woman, Eleventh St. at Hudson St., Hoboken, no date, circa 1946.
8" wide x 10" high print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse has typewritten caption: State Marker at the intersection of 11th and Hudson Streets, Hoboken, marking the site of the first match game. Also on reverse: penciled number 564; round label with printed number 74; round silver Sporting News Collection holographic authentication label.
The view is northeast from is on the dividing island on Eleventh Street with the Hudson Street in the background. While undated, the photo is definitely not from immediately after it was erected or dedicated (at the Hoboken Baseball Centennial parade, June 19, 1946) as rust is seen on the support frame and the metal covering the pillar has numerous dents. The sign was doubled sided; see related.
Text on the plaque:
Baseball
On June 19, 1846 the first match game of baseball was played here on the Elysian Fields between the Knickerbockers and the New Yorks. It is generally conceded that until this time the game was not seriously regarded.

(Note: this sign is no longer extant.)
