Photograph
Black-and-white photographs, four, of a ceremony on with patriotically decorated dais outside entrance to Public School No. 4, west side of Park Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets, Hoboken, no date, circa 1941.
2-3/4" x 4-5/8" high or wide prints. Photographer not indicated, but presumably taken by a member of the Radigan (or Rattigan) family. Reverse of all have print processor's batch number 019; modern ballpoint ink: 5th & Park; earlier pencil notation: 1941?
Public School No. 4 was at street numbers 522 - 528 Park Avenue (built 1890s, now demolished.) Purpose of this warm weather event is not indicated. Patriotic bunting on speaker's stand (erected for this event) would be typical, but American flags are present including a few large ones in the crowd. Our Lady of Grace Marching Band is present in all images; donor's father, James Radigan (1919-1989), was a member of this group.
No individuals are individually identified.
Photo 1: view west from stoop across the street of the speakers, dignitaries and some children on dais; large assembled crowd which included Our Lady of Grace [School] Marching Band (right in crowd.) Note microphone on platform; speakers mounted in school windows.
Photo 2: similar to photo 1.
Photo 3: similar viewpoint as photos 1 and 2, but vertical image showing upper facade.
Photo 4: view east from dais showing the band playing; buildings at numbers 529 and 531 Park Avenue in view.
