Envelope: Tootsie. The Sweets Company of America, Inc., 1515 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, N.J. Postmarked Centralia, IL, March 4, 1940. Printed paper, 3-5/8" high x 6-1/2" wide; sealed; top slit open; original contents not present.
The company made Tootsie Rolls and related products in Hoboken starting about March / April 1938 at the address seen. The stationery was old stationery with the previous location (414-422 West 45th St., New York) overprinted with black bar and new address printed below. So it is likely that the envelope was printed before either in 1938 or before. The now corrected old stock was apparently used as a reply envelope for either a payment remittance or some campaign. The addressee is their printed name and address (metal address plate).
Bottom front promotional text: Candy Is Delicious Food. Enjoy Some Every Day.
The back has a depiction of a girl and boy riding a flying Tootsie Roll flanked by the 1 cent and 5 cent price. Bottom text: Over 200 Million Tootsie Rolls Sold Last Year.
3 cent postage stamp: 50th Anniversary of Statehood - Washington, Montana, North and South Dakota. This commemorative was a 1939 issue.
