First Liberty Ship to Lose Arms
Hoboken, N.J. -- After three years of plying the West Indies, The Liberty ship William Wirt has her 5-inch 50 cal. deck gun removed at Todd Shipyards Corp. Hoboken Division. Vessel was the first American merchant ship to be disarmed since the war's end in Europe.

The S.S. William Wirt did see action outside of the West Indies. It was responsible for shooting down 5 bombers as part of a 13 ship convoy to Algeria in January 1943. Ship returned to civilian duty and was scrapped in 1966.
