B+W photo of southwest Hoboken looking northeast towards New York City, n.d., ca. 1887-1890.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of southwest Hoboken looking northeast towards New York City, no date, circa 1887-1890.
11" x 13-1/2" wide borderless gloss print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse blank except for publication mark-up (publication not indicated). Source of original image is not given; print believed to be an enlargement made from original glass plate negative.
Front has two printed adhesive labels on print: 1, left bottom: View of New York - 1880. Note spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral; 2, right bottom: Theodore Conrad Collection. (See notes regarding the building dates for Saint Patrick's church spires.)
The view is northeast from an elevated position in Jersey City with vista extending to Twelfth Street and beyond.
An important image regarding the development of Hoboken's marshlands on the west side of the city. The street at the right is probably Second Street. Note that the numbered streets have been filled and graded to height. They serve essentially as dikes for areas that have not been drained and filled, althought some blocks appear to have been partially done for the industry that is apparent. Some houses and other commercial structures are seen.
Image 1: full print with labels by original owner
Image 2: locations digitally marked: gas tank (probably at Clinton and 12th Streets - also seen in detail image 4); Saint Patrick's Cathedral spires: Saint Matthew Church, Hoboken; Stevens Castle; barge / boat; New Jersey Junction Railroad right-of-way with four tracks.
Image 3: detail center right. Painted sign on building: Admiral Cigarettes (the brand was the subject of one of the earliest, if not the first, film commercial advertisement made for a tobacco product; it was a 30-second film made in 1897 by Thomas Edison and restored in 2004.)
Image 4: detail center left. Note gas tank at upper left.

Notes: According to official St. Patrick's Cathedral church history, the spires were not completed until 1888 - http://www.saintpatrickscathedral.org/about_history_timeline.php - 1888 - The spires of the Cathedral were completed during the stewardship of Archbishop Michael Corrigan. It is possible that they may have been visible a year or two earliers as seen in this photo, so the early date is stated here as 1887.
