Photograph
Black-and-white photo of the New Jersey Yacht Club (former New York Yacht Club) building and boats, Tenth Street and the Hudson River, Hoboken, no date, circa 1890-1900.
11" x 14" wide borderless satin print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse blank. Source of original image is glass plate negative: 2014.066.0005
The clubhouse was first home of the New York Yacht Club. It was their first clubhouse and built by them in the gothic style in 1845. After the NYYC left Hoboken for Staten Island, it became the home of the NJYC from about 1871 (dates up to 1875 have been seen) and used by them to 1901 (dates from 1899 to 1904 have also been seen.) The building was removed intact from Hoboken in 1904 and is now preserved in Rhode Island.
The view is west from near the riverbank. Many boats are on land and a number of men are working around them. None of these vessels would be categorized as yachts. Note the bare trees suggesting it was late winter or early spring. A man suspended in a bosun's chair is working on the flagpole.
Note in any of the detail images, the general condition of the leaded glass over the entry door is poor with some broken or missing. Also note the extension to the building on its north side.
