Every Kind of Shipwork. A History of Todd Shipyards Corporation 1916-1981. By C. Bradford Mitchell. With wth Advice and Research Collaboration of Edwin K. Linen. Maps, Charts and Diagrams by Frank Cram. New York: [Todd Shipyards Corporation], 1981. First edition thus. Inscribed, signed and dated 7/14/81 on title by author. 8vo hardcover. pp. xvi, 320, illustrated; endpaper illustrations. Indexed.
Todd Shipyards was created in 1916 by the purchase of three shipyards. Among the first shipyards that they operated was the Tietjen & Lang Dry Dock Co. at the northern end of Hoboken. It closed on Sept. 1, 1965.
Todd was a major shipbuilding and repair company during the period covered by this book. Hoboken was but one (most important in the early years) of many yards and facilities, but there are several references to Hoboken and Tietjen & Lang.
Table of contents, list of illustrations and index pages related to Hoboken, Tietjen & Lang and Todd Hoboken are imaged along with a map of Todd operations in the Port of New York and New Jersey, timeline chart of Todd Shipyards, image of freighter Hoboken and endpaper illustration of Tietjen & Lang circa 1916.
Also imaged is page 220-221 which discusses the end of Hoboken operations on September 1, 1965 and the disposition of the property which was ultimately abandoned to the City of Hoboken in 1969. Also imaged is page 35 which discusses the role of the Hoboken and Red Hook yards in work done on the interned German ships during World War I. Several of the ocean liners are named including the Leviathan (formerly the Vaterland.)
Also references found about the development of ships adapted for containerization, Sea-Land (Seatrain) Services, which apparently started in Hoboken.
