Barrett was employed as a longshoreman on the Hoboken piers. The Museum does not own the original. A digital scan and color reference print are on file.
The photo was taken from about where Washington St. meets 14th St . and looks toward the gate at Hudson and 14th Sts. that goes into the at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken Division. An unidentified vessel can be seen in drydock no. 4 at the right. The pier 5 gantry crane can be seen just south of another unidentified vessel.
Romano's Bar sign, 56 14th St., is at the left. The 1965 Hoboken telephone directory lists Romano's with two different names and phone numbers at the same address: Romano's 14th St. Bar & Grill; Romano's 14th St. Clam Broth House (the listing for Clam Broth House, 34 Newark St. does not mention this location or phone number.)
On the south side at 63 14th St. is the sign for Lou's Mfr's Shop: More Dress & Sportswear (listed in the phone directory as Lou's Army and Navy Store).
