There is a Hoboken, New York (a very small village in Otsego County near New Berlin and approximately 25 miles southwest of Cooperstown, present zip code 13411) and a postmarked envelope from this era has been seen.
It is believed that this item was intended for Hoboken, New Jersey and was mis-marked. During the period that this piece was probably created, passenger shipping lines that operated out of Hoboken often listed the scheduled departures and arrivals their liners as New York even though they arrived and departed from Hoboken.
The item itself could have multiple uses as a functional object: ashtray, candy dish, nut dish, ring holder, etc.
