Analytical balance (scale) from science classroom of Stevens - Hoboken Academy, Hoboken, in use circa 1935-1975.
Object/Artifact
Christian Becker Chainomatic analytical balance from science classroom of Stevens - Hoboken Academy, Hoboken, in use circa 1935-1975. Mahogany wood case, clear and black glass plus various metal pieces; enclosed are two small brass gram chains. Overall dimensions, closed: 17-1/2" high x 18" wide x 10" deep. Date of manufacture and model / serial number not indicated; probably made 1930-1935.
This laboratory scale may also be known as a chain-gram balance and the brand is also known as Chain-o-matic. Used by lab students at the now defunct private school, it was according to the donors one of several used.
Front window is counterweighted to open; other sides are fixed. No bottom drawer as built.
Patent date on column: November 7, 1916. No manufacturer's plate on exterior front as is usual (it would have had the model and/or serial number, although blind-stamped on the left side of wood case are numerals "12116"; these may be the vendor's catalog stock number.) Model name and company name are on white ivory measurment scale plate at center. The model appears to be in the range of Becker Chainomatics from 8 to 16.
